Advancing the art and understanding of fine woodworking!

April 10th Guild Meeting

Here is the challenge:   How do you make these rolling pins???????

Don’t give up.  Come to our April meeting and James Porter will show us how he does it.

James will also talk about the course he took on cabinet making.

He was awarded a Guild scholarship to partially fund the cost of the course.

See you at Woodcraft in Roswell at 6:30, and don't forget Show 'N Tell.

Finished Again

It had been three years since Peter Gedrys led our Spring Symposium on wood finishing, so it was time to once again be refinished and entertained by Peter’s expert knowledge and fast wit. This year, we had the benefit of attendance by several members of the Peachtree Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM) through a membership reciprocity agreement, for a total attendance of 48 woodworkers.

The first day was mostly spent by Peter teaching the group about the basics of color selection and blending.   He provided copies of a color wheel and explained how to use primary, secondary, and complimentary colors to achieve the desired color result.   He explained the importance and proper techniques of surface preparation, including sanding and pore-filling. He also discussed the differences among wash-coating, seal-coating, glazing, and toning to use either dyes or stains to color and finish a project.

The second day focused on various finishes, including oil, varnish, shellac, and polyurethane. With audience participation, Peter showed the proper method of preparing an applicator pad and using it to apply shellac.  He also demonstrated the processes of ebonizing and gilding. Final subjects were surface polishing and waxing.

Our thanks to Nuane Neely for arranging Peter’s visit and to Jim Milam for ensuring his transportation and other logistics.   And, of course, our thanks to Peter Gedrys for helping us become better woodworkers.

The Woodworking Show a Success

The Wood Show, held at the Cobb Galleria, made its 2017 visit to the Atlanta area on March 31st, April 1st, and April 2nd.  Attendance was strong, and the Woodworkers' Guild had many interested patrons stop by our Booth, and we certainly anticipate some new members.

Guild members also brought many beautiful projects for display as well as entering the Annual competition.  The results, as well as photographs will be ready for publication in the May Newsletter.

2017 MEMBERSHIP INCENTIVE PROGRAM
Woodworkers Guild of Georgia
By Kevin May

Purpose:  Reward the member(s) whose efforts of promoting the Guild brings in the most visitors and new members.

Incentive:  Be the member who either brings the most visitors to regular Monday night meetings or the member who refers the most new members, you will receive your 2018 membership in the Woodworkers' Guild of Georgia for free.

How:
(1) A guest registry will be made at each regular Monday night meeting (January through November) and the guest will be asked who enticed them to attend the meeting.  The registry will be recorded and reported at each month's meeting as to which members are bringing in the most visitors.
(2) All new members will be asked who referred them to the Guild.  The online and hardcopy membership application forms will be updated to include a field for this data.  This will also be reported at each monthly meeting.

(*) If it happens to be that the same member wins both contests, they will receive their 2018 membership in the Guild for free and would also be able to receive a $45 discount on the 2018 spring seminar.

At this time, two members, Bob Forsthoffer and Mark Haugland have each brought 1 guest.
The competition has begun !
