Marking and Measuring
at February Guild Meeting

Join us for a guaranteed interesting program about everything you wanted to know about Marking and Measuring tools.

Tom Melcher will present, with supporting materials and photos, on a variety of marking tools including squares, marking gauges, winding sticks, center finders, offset tools, punches and awls, etc.  Measuring tools will include tape measures, rules, story sticks, sectors, compasses, dividers, etc., as well as digital equivalents.

Tom will include tips and tricks as well as best methods in using many of them. He will also give buying advice on many of the tools from very inexpensive (some home made) to the sky is the limit.

It will be a fast-moving presentation so you don't want to miss it!
What Do You Want to Learn About ?
Also at the February meeting, we will conduct an Annual survey to obtain your input on the programs you would like us to plan for 2018.   Last year, Kevin May did an excellent job preparing lists of topics for your selection.  This input was particularly valuable to the Programs Committee in selecting and developing the programs that were presented in 2017.  Because feedback from the membership on these programs was so positive, the Programs Committee worked again with Kevin to develop a new list of topics.
  (Click  HERE  to review)

At the January meeting, each person will get 10 dots to place next to program topics on large charts that he/she would like the committee, under Ken Gregg’s leadership, to consider for 2018.  This is your chance to express the interests that would improve your woodworking knowledge and skills.  We hope you will attend the meeting and participate in this exercise.

And Don't Forget Show 'N Tell !
Chisel Sharpening Techniques at January Guild Meeting

If you attended the Guild meeting on January 8, you had a chance to learn how, as well as get your hands dirty with some various ways to get a chisel really sharp.

You should be able to use a chisel to cut the hair on the back of your hand or slice a strip of newspaper, if proper sharpness has been achieved.

You also learned how to polish the back of the chisel.  We practiced on a bucket full of chisels which were given to Jim Wright by Highland Hardware.

John Jones used his Tormek, which is a slow speed grinder with a wide, water-cooled wheel.  Roger Moister, Jim Milam and Tom Melcher showed many members how to use water stones to get a fabulous edge and a mirror finish on the back of the chisels.
Ken Gregg demonstrated a Veritas jig for grinding the right angle and then honed the chisel
on a fine (5 micron) diamond plate.  This was followed by polishing the edge on
a Razor Sharp paper wheel with white rouge.

Tom Melcher printed and passed out a pamphlet reviewing details of sharpening, and also provided a large chart of various sharpening abrasives with the grits listed in
microns — the only reliable way to compare grits.

Many thanks to the above gentlemen for their time and expertise in leading attendees in this hands-on workshop in Chisel Sharpening.

President’s Message
Gary Fader

And so, another era in the history of the Woodworkers Guild of Georgia begins with a new president and a new Board of Directors.  I am pleased to report that all Board positions are filled and the talent and dedication of every Board member is quite impressive.   That’s not to say each Guild member should simply defer to the Board for all ideas and activities.  We are all interested in your continuous input and feedback, and take every suggestion seriously.

I feel very honored at being selected to head up the Guild for the coming year.  I’ve been a member since 2012, and served as your programs co-chairman, treasurer, and vice president. I’m an engineer by education and have served in various management positions within the nuclear power industry.  I got started in woodworking in 7th grade wood shop and some years later, my first major project was making furniture for my two sons from pine boards and 2 by 4s. I’m pleased to say that this furniture has been passed down to my grandsons.  Work commitments took priority for many years, but as I approached retirement my termite tendencies took on a renewed interest.  I finished out a basement shop, with nearly all tools on wheels because of space limitations.  So now I focus on making various toys, boxes, clocks, and some furniture.  As you might have heard, I’m partial to power tools, and have jokingly said that even my hand planes have motors on them.

I think many things about the Guild are going well, for example:  we continue to get positive feedback on the programs presented at our meetings and attendance is consistently good, we have improved the camera coverage of the presentations, our main seminars have benefited from excellent presenters, our newsletter is published on time each month with very high quality, and our patron sponsors have been most supportive.  So, will you see any changes in the future?  Maybe, as I wrestle with issues that I think need attention.   Here’s my short list of concerns:

• Our Board position descriptions are about 5 years old and many do not reflect current practices.  This makes it difficult for a new Board member to know their job.  (These are currently under revision.)
• Our membership is aging and declining.  We need to reach out to a broad spectrum of potential members so our programs can continue and benefit others.
• Our community involvement, specially regarding charitable projects has not been an area of focus.   Although somewhat addressed last year by making 100 toys for children in Scottish Rite Hospital and making tables for returning veterans, we could do much more and have a great time doing it.
• Our Scholarship program is hardly used, although it makes up a large portion of our annual budget.  What’s up with that?
• Our policy on Membership Privileges specifies that we have a mentoring program, but it’s not well defined or implemented.  Should we do more in this area?
• Our website has come a long way in development, but still could be better and more useful.

That’s probably enough to chew on for awhile, although my full list has other items.  As I said above, let me and the Board members know your thoughts and suggestions on these issues, and if asked to participate in solutions, I hope you’ll be supportive.

Guild Members Invited to SAPFM Plane Making

Sponsor:   Peachstate SAPFM Chapter
Presenter:  Tod Herrli - Plane Maker

Seminar:    Friday and Saturday  -  March 10 & 11, 2018
Workshop:  Sunday and Monday  -  March 12 & 13, 2018

On Saturday March 10, Tod will begin by demonstrating how to repair and tune problem planes.   He will restore 3 to 4 problem planes brought by SAPFM members to workable condition.  Attendees are encouraged to bring planes that need tune-up.  Later that day, he will demonstrate the art of designing and creating crown moldings of various sizes with hollows and rounds.  On Sunday March 11, Tod will offer an extensive demonstration on the design and construction of side escapement planes.  This presentation will include design and layout principles, selection of wood species, dimensioning stock, excavating the plane mouth and mortise cavity, use of plane floats to tune and true the mortise, shaping the sole of the plane, cutting and rough grinding of plane irons, heat treating and tempering irons, final grinding and honing of irons, tuning the plane wedge to facilitate the flow of shavings and final detailing of the plane body.  The weekend program is open to SAPFM and Woodworkers’ Guild members for a fee of $70.00, provided participants register and provide payment in advance.  The fee for non-members and for walk-up registration is $80.00.

Tod is the instructor and owner of the Mississinewa Workshop and has been teaching plane making for several years.   He has demonstrated at numerous woodworking and tool collector clubs.  Tod was featured in an Indiana State Museum exhibit reproducing 18th Century tools displayed at the museum.  Tod has taught at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking and is scheduled to teach at the Olde Mill Cabinet Shoppe and Tillers International.  Tod has collaborated with Roy Underhill, Scott Phillips and Mike Dunbar by making tools used in their productions.

A two day optional workshop for SAPFM and Guild members will follow on March 12 and 13.  This workshop will allow participants to make one or two planes depending upon their skill level and the planes selected.  Plane choices will include a range of side escapement planes including hollow, round, ogee, thumbnail and ovolo.  The fee for this workshop is $120.00 which includes all materials.  Attendance at the workshop is limited due to bench work space.  Advance registration and payment for the workshop is required.  Workshop attendance for SAPFM and Guild members will be determined based on receipt of registration forms with payment – first come, first served.

A registration form, attached with this notice to Peach State SAPFM members, must be returned with payment in order to complete your registration.  Registration forms for those who do not get the SAPFM Newsletter may be obtained by E-mailing Ken Carpenter at   kwczands@yahoo.com

The meeting and workshop will be held at the Woodcraft store at 1085 Holcomb Bridge Road in Alpharetta.
The meeting and workshop will start at 9:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM on all days.

My Guild Scholarship Class Experience
By John Nielsen

I have had many great experiences since joining the Woodworker’s Guild of Georgia.  However, there is something surreal when you can learn something, have someone help pay and also get to check off a topic from the “bucket list.”   Such was my experience when I attended the Woodwright School using a WWGGA Scholarship, and spent a week with Roy Underhill !

Until July 2017, all classes with Roy Underhill as the instructor were sold out.  But June 30-July 4 was my chance to learn from and work with Roy and Bill Anderson during Benchwork Week.   Having only eight students allowed a lot of personal coaching on woodworking techniques and get hands-on use of several antique hand tools.  Having an antique tool store above the school helped to provide an opportunity for continued skill building with what I can proudly claim are now my own tools.

One night we took a field trip to visit blacksmith/whitesmith Peter Ross at his home shop and coal-fired forge.  He and Roy worked together at Colonial Williamsburg and proved the importance of having good, lasting friendships.  We got a history lesson on nails in America as Peter hand forged several square nails from a bar of iron.  He also showed us a reproduction of a remote-controlled door handle mechanism he had just finished for placement at Thomas Jefferson’s bedroom at Monticello.  Quite an honor to dissect a piece of 18th century history and quite an artisan to hand-make a duplicate!

We all left with a benchtop tool chest we each made by hand.  (I brought mine to the August meeting.)  We experienced the rewards of working with hand tools alone and learned interesting new techniques to address the mistakes made when too much brawn and too little patience was used.  We hand cut dovetails, hand-planed all surfaces, hand-chiseled mortises, hand-planed rabbets, tongue-and-grooves and some students purchased Peter Ross forged hardware.  The priceless take-away really was the one-on-one coaching, hands-on experience, sharing of expert knowledge and sage advice we received.  No matter your woodworking level, I highly recommend taking classes to improve your skills and knowledge.  Once you find something of interest, talk with Joe Rodriguez to use the benefit of our Scholarship Program.
