Introduction to CNC Woodworking
March 14th Guild Meeting

John Hatten discussed basic CNC programming software and CNC operation at our March Guild meeting.  He started his presentation with stories, experiences and photos of his CNC work.  He stated that there are several CNC software programs and CNC machines available.  His demonstration was based on Aspire software produced by Vectric.  Aspire is a 3D program, but Vectric also has VCarve Pro and VCarve Desktop which are 2D programs.  Demo versions of these programs are available at vectric.com.  These demo versions allow the user to develop programs and observe a simulation of the CNC cutting process.  They do not allow the user to save or actually run the program.

During his demonstration, John discussed various commands available in the software and programmed a small sign with a Guild member's name.  This program was then downloaded into an Axiom CNC machine and members were able to observe the sign being made.

Woodcraft has several CNC machines available for sale and would be available to discuss these machines with anyone.

President’s Message
March 2019
Gary Fader

Woodworker’s Dilemma

Let’s assume, as a hobbyist, you love making furniture. Maybe you even belong to SAPFM and your skill level is amazing. So, you’re looking forward to the next project and you say to your spouse “I’ve got a great idea for this piece of furniture with these beautiful inlays and shapely design features.” What you get back is a blank stare that communicates we don’t need, nor have room for anymore furniture. So you call your grown kids and offer them a handmade gift of a lifetime. After a period of silence, the response is: “We love your work but it doesn’t fit in with our Pottery Barn motif.” Suddenly, you’re out of clients!

Maybe the answer is to change your product and clientele. Take those amazing woodworking talents and apply them to small things like toys, boxes, and other gifts. If you have friends, relatives, or grandchildren, you have clientele. There are few things better than watching a very young child, just starting to walk, pulling around a wooden dog on wheels with the legs gyrating in alternating sequence. Or seeing the joy on the faces of a newly married couple when they open a wedding gift and it’s a beautifully inlayed and trimmed jewelry box. Or even showing up for dinner at a friend’s house with a segmented cheese or cutting board, or a bandsaw box. You could also donate a project to your religious organization for sale or auction.

The beauty is that you never seem to run out of clients or projects, and the amount of wood involved is minimal enough that you can get into some exotic species without breaking the budget. Have I motivated you and brought a smile back on your spouse’s face?

2019 Woodworking Show A Big Success
By John Champion

The Guild was very active again this year at the annual Woodworking Show held at the Cobb Galleria Centre March 15-17.  Participating at the show is a way for us to meet and invite new prospects to join our group as well as share our insights with visitors who have woodworking questions.  It is a fun time to socialize and meet others while experiencing the fun of wandering around the show to see other excellent presentations and products about woodworking.

Our booth was anchored on the two corners with demonstrations throughout the show by Ted Baldwin (there for his 33rd year) demonstrating cutting and making small gift items and Chris K'nerr carving incredible gunstocks at the other end.

We had an excellent display of projects built by our members and held a drawing for prizes from eight of our Patron Sponsors to draw in visitors.  Total value of these prizes was $3,100.

In the center front of our booth, we set up Tom Melcher's large Sjorberg workbench where hand tool demonstrations were conducted showing joinery and plane techniques.  The center table was also the point from which we engaged visitors in various conversations.

Over 20 Guild members participated in our booth and between the prize drawings and the names we gathered from personal interactions at the center workbench, e gathered over 270 contact names with whom e can follow up to promote Guild membership and activities.

Special thanks to those who visited the show.  If you could not get there this year, make a note to attend in 2020.

Angie Weck, the winner of the Suwanee Lumber door prize, picking up her lumber at Suwanee Lumber.

Audio/Visual System Installed At Woodcraft
By Jim Milam

Last month's meeting debuted significant enhancements in the audio/visual experience of our meetings.  There are now two large flat screen TV's mounted high on the wall in Woodcraft's classroom.  But that's only the beginning.  Two new ceiling mounted cameras with pan, zoom and tilt capability are also in place, and there is a new audio system.  The cameras and sound system are controlled from a console that includes a joy stick and switching capabilities.  With the exception of the aforementioned second TV (donated by the local SAPFM chapter), all of the new equipment was purchased by the Guild.

Operationally the new system is very flexible and will accommodate the image from any one of three cameras; and/or the feed from a speaker's laptop computer can be projected to any one of the two TV's.  Two new ceiling mounted speakers greatly enhance the sound quality for anyone in the classroom, regardless of where you are sitting.

This AV project is an excellent addition to our meeting space, and we need to show our appreciation to Woodcraft for the use of the classroom.  This is done by expressing thanks to Robert Stebbins, manager of Woodcraft, and by purchasing woodworking tools and supplies while there.

The design and installation of this new system is the work product of Guild member Michael Lawsky.  Michael has extensive audio/visual design experience and without his effort we would have been in deep soup (or we would have paid a considerable sum to accomplish the task).  At the March meeting our President, Gary Fader, presented Michael with a "thank you" plaque, and a gift card.  May I suggest that each of you take the time to thank Michael for his contribution of time and expertise.

It is significant to note that more than half of the cost of this new equipment was funded by the sale of woodworking equipment donated to the Guild.

Show 'N Tell

Charlie Levan, Gary Fader and Gary Fjeld shared their projects during the March Guild meeting.  Charlie showed some bowls he had turned, Gary Fader presented a cherry jewelry box with cocobolo banding and Gary Fjeld showed a child's stool where all the pieces had been cut on his CNC and the stool lettering was engraved by the CNC.

Upcoming Tool sale and Guild Picnic

Mark your calendars for Saturday June 15th, 2019.

The Woodworkers Guild of Georgia will be conducting a Woodworking Tool Sale, followed by a family style Picnic.

Families are welcome, but children must be supervised as there will be sharp tools on display.

Recently the Guild received a donation of a complete woodworking shop from the family of a life-long woodworker and former Woodcraft employee.

In addition to stationary tools like 2 lathes, dust collector, belt-disc sander, 14" bandsaw, sanding table, scroll saws, and others there are hundreds of hand tools, jigs and fixtures.

All items will be "priced to sell"

There will not be any "early bird" sales.

Plan to bring tools that you would like to sell.

The sale will be held at one of our members' shop in Cumming, just off of GA-400, exit #14.

Details will be provided as we get closer to the date.

For more information, email John_J1@bellsouth.net.  We do not plan to create a list of the items since there are so many and we are not prepared for emails asking for information on specific items or prices.
