Resawing Boards with Jim Milam
at November 13th Guild Meeting
We look forward to, and are privilege to have Jim Milam teach us the techniques and skills used in Resawing Lumber, at the November Meeting.
We will also have the election of the Board of Directors, and Show 'N Tell.
Following is a quote from Jim, followed by his outline of the presentation:
"I have spent a great deal of time organizing my thoughts on Resawing, and I believe I have an exhaustive approach in mind and one that will speak to most of the Guild’s questions on the subject."
Knowing Jim, this is most likely an understatement, and given the many excellent presentations he has generously made, this will undoubtedly be an educational opportunity not to be missed !

Lumber Yard Wood Selection
at Guild's Annual Fall Mini-Symposium
at Atlanta Hardwoods
Do you remember having reservations and doubts about going to the Lumber yard the first few times? Even if you’ve been to the Lumberyard many, many times, you’d feel even more confident after listening to the Fall Mini-Symposium on Lumber Prep and Select, presented by Tom Melcher and Roger Moister.
Planning and preparing to go shopping for lumber goes a long way toward knowing what you are looking for upon arrival. Having a vision and knowing what you want to build is the first part, then preparing a sketch and a cut list, as well as a parts and shopping list for larger projects, will give you the confidence you need to go to the Lumber yard with a plan in mind. Planning and preparation is key!
Much of the lumber at Hardwoods is FAS (First and Seconds) and is free of major defects, but you still have to be aware of how to work around defects like knots, wane, cupping, bows, and checking.
Knowing how to get more stable quarter-sawn and rift-sawn wood from flat sawn boards is key in finding boards that match your needs.
Buying rough lumber (you generally have to ask for it) can save money on larger projects, but it is harder to read the grain than on planed boards. Buying rough lumber also helps you achieve consistent color because much of a bundle of rough lumber is from the same tree(s).
Wood moisture was also discussed as it relates to its expansion and contraction, along with tips on buying matching plywood for your project.
The text of the presentation was included with a picture-filled 36 page color brochure that made it easy to follow along and ask questions. The brochure included tips for any project, and tips for larger projects, along with a list of resources.
The following sources containing much of the information that Tom and Roger presented in their very well-prepared, communicated, and educational Mini-Symposium. Great job, gentlemen !
